Sylvia R. Thompson

1924 ∼ 2013

Sylvia R. Thompson, 89, of Orange went home to be with the Lord Sunday, November 17, 2013, following a brief illness.

She was born July 19, 1924, in Havre, Montana, the daughter of pioneering wheat farmers. A member of the "greatest generation," she became a military wife and lived in a number of locations, including Oregon, where she gave birth to her first daughter, and California, where her son was born. The family moved to Orange in 1954, when her now-deceased former husband, John Derrick, was asked to work as news director for KOGT Radio. Eventually, they went into ministry, a calling that stayed with Sylvia long after John's death. A licensed and ordained full-gospel minister, Sylvia could best be described as a bit of a firebrand when it came to preaching, something she dearly loved to do. She often ministered at her home church, which was first the Mauriceville Assembly of God and then Community Church in Orange. She also would travel to ladies meetings or retreats, often accompanied by her youngest daughter who had been born the year she moved to Orange. It was during this time that Sylvia was introduced to Robert M. Thompson whom she married in 1974. The love of each other's lives for nearly four decades, Bob opened his arms to her family and her church, worked hard to support her and thoroughly enjoyed being a preacher's husband. He cared for her with the utmost love during her difficult later years.

Her home going will be recognized and her life honored 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Officiants will include the Honorable Dennis Powell and the Reverend Harold Nazworth. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens near Bridge City.

Serving as Pallbearers will be David Wagner, Steve Menard, Gene Allen, Steve Howard, Wayne Lewis, Terry Myers, Myron Creamer, Kent Welch, and Reverend Charles Lavine.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, Robert M. Thompson; a son, John E. Derrick and his wife, Nancy E. Derrick of Mauriceville; two daughters, Anne Lavine and her husband, the Reverend Charles Lavine, of Fort Worth, and Deborah "Debi" Derrick of Beaumont; a sister, Myrtle Rhodes of Alma, Ark.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

Sylvia was a true example of a Godly woman. She was a role model for the young and old alike. She should be the "HERO" young women look up to. And older women mold themselves after. She was a great help to me. I learned a lot from Sylvia. I will neverforget her. My sympathy and prayers to Bob and all the family.

Sylvia's teaching, preaching and prophetic ministry changed my life. She was always true to God's Word, helping so many of us to grow up in the Lord. It was a tremendous blessing to be able to sit under her ministry for which I will be forever grateful. Not only were we taught the Word of God, we witnessed the genuine moving of the Holy Spirit week after week at Community Church's Wednesday morning meetings back in the 80's. Sylvia was also very practical as well as spiritual. She was a role model and inspiration to all who knew her. I will never forget her or the precious words given to me by the Lord through her. I have seen many come to pass and believe with all my heart that not one of them will fall to the ground. May the Lord bless you, her precious family, with great peace at this difficult time, knowing that you shall surely see her again in the presence of the King of Kings & Lord of Lords! Her legacy will live on in you, in me, and in all those whose lives were blessed to know Sylvia Thompson. Love, Patrice Bates

What a beautiful woman. Heaven has gained and we have lost a wonderful prayer warrior. My thoughts and prayers are with the family as they celebrate her life tomorrow. A special note to my friend, Debi - I love you and even though I can not be with you tomorrow please know my arms are wrapped around you in prayer. Love you.

Sylvia was a wonderful mentor to us as an elder and mentor of our care group for many years. She married us almost 10 years ago now. She always said she could "tie a good knot" and we're happy to say it's still tied. We will always love and cherish our memories of Sylvia. She left a lasting impact of Godliness and faith on our family. With much love, Chris and LeAnn Chisholm

I will miss my dear friend, Sylvia. I met her at Community Church many years ago and she and Bob were always together. She loved her Lord and I would love to watch her when the Spirit fell on her and she began to speak...powerful! The most precious memories I have will always be sitting around her table having lunch each Sunday afternoon after church with her daughter, Debi. Sylvia and Bob took me as one of their own and I wil always love both of them for that. I wouldn't marry my husband until I knew that I had Sylvia's approval!! Too many sweet memories to share...she left her love mark on many, many people. I will look forward to the day we see each other again! Love you, "Blackbird" (Joellyn Creamer)

I was in Sylvia's prayer group for many years and in fact, the prayer group was in my home for several years. She was a wonderful lady and she influenced my life greatly! I know many times she prayed for me and got me though some very hard times. I will always remember her kindness, her faith and her teachings!! I loved listening to Sylvia teach the Word of God!!! She was very special!! Sharon Stephenson

I met Sylvia in 1987 when my family moved to Orange. We started attending Community Church where she taught classes on Wednesday night, as well as teaching in homes in the area, and at the TV station. I went with my tape recorder everywhere I heard she would be speaking because I knew she would expand on the Word as I never heard it before, and most likely speak a prophetic word into my life. She, indeed, leaves a legacy with all of us.

There have been many "kitchen table"visits with my mentor and friend. I hold our friendship as a very dear and honored relationship. Sylvia always spoke of God's faithfulness. Her arm would pump and she would have that delightful giggle whenever she had an opportunity to speak into your life! What a legacy she leaves us! I will miss her. Virginia Cunningham
