Dr. Steven D Mazzola
Dr. Steven D Mazzola, 61, of Orange, Texas, passed away on June 23, 2015, peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness which he fought with courage and dignity. Now, as his family mourns his passing, they also celebrate all that he was to them.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 5:00pm, Friday, June 26, 2015, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Orange, officiated by Father Tom Phelan. Immediately after the Mass at St. Francis, a private entombment will take place. Following entombment, the family will receive guests at the St. Francis San Damiano Center. Cremation is under the direction of Claybar Haven of Rest Crematory.
Born in Orange, Texas, on March 21, 1954, he was the son of Benny Mazzola, Jr. and Irona (Tibby) Mazzola. Steven attended St. Mary School, and graduated from Stark High School in 1972. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree from Lamar University, a Master’s Degree from Texas A&M, and his Medical Doctorate Degree from the University of Texas Medical School in 1986. He was a Board Certified Critical Care Internal Medicine Specialist in Orange for 29 years and loved his healing profession and caring for his patients.
In 1983 he married Linda Kay Hall of Orange and together they raised 4 children who he adored greatly and they loved him as their hero. He was the ultimate family man. He spent his life always trying to do everything he could for them and for all those around him. Steven was the most loving husband, dad, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and physician, all wrapped up in a shy, unassuming, and very humble Christian man. He had a great sense of humor and was so much fun to be with during family times and gatherings. He honored and observed the traditions of family, faith, and holidays. He especially loved Christmas and was always eager to host an event. He loved his times at the lake house golfing, fishing, and simply being surrounded by his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Benny Mazzola, Jr.; his brother, Dr. Benny (Beno) Mazzola, III; and his sister Virginia (Gigi) Mazzola Luna.
He is survived by his mother Irona (Tibby) Mazzola; his loving wife of 32 years, Linda Kay (Hall) Mazzola; his sons, Steven Mazzola, Jr., and Adam Mazzola, both of Houston, Texas; his daughters, Leslie and her husband, Dr. Justin Hogan of Baton Rouge and their daughter Parker Noelle, Lauren and husband Brandon Hogan of Orange; his brother, Gilbert and wife Debbie Mazzola; his sisters, Liz Oliva, Anita and husband Jim Layne, and Gail and husband Paul Van Der Maas; parents-in-law, Martha and Stan Hall, all of Orange; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, patients, and colleagues, all of whom mourn his passing while celebrating the blessing that he was.
In lieu of flowers, the family of Dr. Mazzola requests that anyone wishing to make donations, make them to a charity of your choice or to The Dr. Steven D. Mazzola Scholarship Fund, c/o 202 Border St., Orange, Tx 77630.

Thanks to all my husbands friends and family who took the time to write of this wall. It was wonderful hearing how much he was loved and respected. It is sad to know how many will miss him, as we all will, but the thought of him being greeted in Heaven thrills my heart. If your destiny may not be Heaven yet, I pray you reconsider now. Paradise sounds good to me. Lovingly, Kay

I cannot find the words to express the magnitude of my sorrow or to convey to this wonderful family the depth of my sympathy. Dr. Mazzola was the BEST life had to offer. I am so thankful I was blessed to have him as MY doctor. I was at the service, Kay, but I did not stay to see you, as there were so many people, I knew you would be overwhelmed. I hope to call or talk to you after you have had time for some rest. Please know that the impact of his life and his death is shared by so many. I loved that precious man and I am grateful for his care. He made each patient feel that he or she was the ONLY patient he had! Every single time he saw you, he would sit down right there, and you knew he was going to LISTEN, and he did that so well. May God give you, your children, and his mother, the strength to carry on without him. I love you dearly. I have sent a contribution to his scholarship fund. I wish I could have done so much more.

I'd like to share this happy memory about Dr. Mazzola. Back when we were kids and I was living in Gilmer Homes. Me, Beano & Gilbert would play alot of baseball @ The Gilmer Homes ballpark. After playing awhile Beano would say " well me and Gilbert better go and check on Stevie"! I told that to Dr. Steve a couple times. To the Mazzola family please accept my condolences and Dr. Mazzola may you rest in peace. Also thank you for saving my dads life many years ago, when you gave him the life saving shot. Sincerely, Mark Oldham

I have tried to write this several times, but how do I express just how much I respected and admired this great Man! I worked with him for several years. I made rounds with him at the hospital and everyday he taught me something about caring for patients and medicine. He loved his patients and always made sure they were getting the best care. He always backed me on my decisions if I was right and if I wasn't he would let me know, but always in a professional matter. He always wanted to be called about his patients and would never get upset with me for botheriing him. He would get upset if i didn' call. Once a patient had a change in level of care ( the patient was stable) so I didn't call him because it was the weekend and I knew he was at the lake with family. Well on Monday he ask me to stay after a meeting. Wow was I squirming, because I hated to have him upset with me. I explained why I didn t call and he looked at me and said, "Karen I hate surprises, just ask Kay". He was also, my Physician and knew I had the Best! I considered him a friend and love his beautiful family. I will keep all of you in my prayers I will miss him!

It saddened me to hear of Steve's death. Graduating from high school the same year Steve did, I always knew he was destined for great things. The way he never stopped learning was evident in the thought-provoking questions he asked when the rest of us were half-listening. Years later, my parents relayed Steve had become a doctor, and from the comments, he was a fine one. He will be missed. In the end, we all want to have contributed enough to be missed like Steve will be. Susan Mumbach Lester

There are no new words to express what everyone else has already written about Dr. Steve and Kay and all the staff at the office. I just saw Dr.Steve 3 weeks ago in his office after losing my husband of 43 years. Dr. Steve had a big hug for me while I cried and when I tried to ask him how he was he changed the subject. I want Kay and his family and Tammy and the rest of the medical office staff to know how much we love all of you and praying for strength during this very sad time No one can ever take Dr. Steve's place. I love you all. Sherry Theriot

Our families were very close, in fact my dad & Steven dad were best friends. I remember before color TV became a standard, our family would often go to the Mazzolo house on Sunday's to watch Disney & Bonanza with them since those two shows were in color and they had one of the first color tv's. That's just one of many memories I have of Steven, since we played together as children for years!

I first met Steve at Lamar University as a lowly college student about the time he and Kay started dating. We all survived on Kay’s Tuna Helper and on special occasions Hamburger Helper, while we braved the ups and downs of crazy college lives and schedules. Steve was the most studious of all of us and never hesitated to help anyone with issues in a class or in life. Much to Steve’s credit he was able to see beyond Kay’s cooking abilities and married her in 1983. I had the honor of hosting them in Santa Fe for their honeymoon and we had a great time snow skiing and seeing the sites. Over the years, they continually demonstrated their love and commitment for each other, which they passed on to their four children and first grandchild. From the sidelines, I was always impressed that every major decision that Steve made in his life and career was for Kay, his children, and his very large extended family. Steve will be greatly missed by all of us; however, his legacy will live on through that tight cohesive bond that he built between everyone he encountered. Steve, I wish you God’s speed and rewards for a life well lived! Mike Shepherd

I simply remember the smile. Good guy with a great approach to life, even as a young man & high school classmate of mine. Had not spent much time with Steve of late, but I will always remember our pickup basketball games at Eddie Vaughan's house in Orange after school during the week.. I will never forget his "slide step" as he would shoot the ball and, most times, hit nothing but the bottom of the net! What a pleasure to have known Steve as I did. Danny King

My heart is heavy and saddened by the loss of Dr. Mazzola, however I know he is out of pain and in a much better place. He was one of a kind doctor, so thorough to make sure one's health was taken care of and always took time to listen to his patients. Only a little over two weeks ago I was in for my physical and follow up lab results. He was still the ultimate caring doctor, all attention to me his patient. I also commend the way he ran his practice/office...a friendly and caring staff always. My condolences to his wife, children and all the rest of his family. Beth Dupree

What do I say about the doctor who saved my life by diagnosing my thyroid cancer 11 1/2 years ago? Dr. Mazzola was destined to be a man of medicine by his compassinate and patient spirit. His wife, Kay, also generates this same Christian spirit, as does his long-time medical office person, Tammy. Please accept much hearfelt sympathy from our family during this saddest of times. May we all strive to live our lives as dear Dr. Mazzola did.
With blessings & peace,

I remember when Dr. Mazzola first came to work at Orange Memorial. He was considerate, nice to us nurses. We figured after he had been there awhile he would pick up "bad" habits of our doctors who had been there for some time. He never changed. He was down to earth and yes he had a wonderful sense of humor. We had one of his patients in ICU that wasn't doing well and he was there in the wee hours of the night. He was in the nurse's station and there was a bag of Sour Patch Kids (when they first came out) sitting there. Of course he tried them, we just laughed at the expression on his face. In comes the cardiologist on call to consult on Dr. Mazzola's patient. Dr. Mazzola being the kind human being insisted that the cardiologist "try" the candy saying they were very good. Got to see the cardiologist's contorted face after he bit into the candy at 3:00am As they say now.... Priceless. It was that sense of humor that took away the pressure of working in ICU. It enabled us to stay focused on our patients and give them the best care we could. I also had the pleasure of working on pediatrics with Kay when she came to work at the hospital. To Kay and to all of Dr. Mazzola's family I am truly and deeply sorry for your loss.

Oh how we should celebrate the life of this wonderful man and physician. He was very devout in his religion and was a man of God! He radiated in kindness and concern for everyone. He had an old soul and a Kindred heart. I am a better person to have known him. To have witnessed his life work. Blessed is our community; not only for his dedication, but for his contribution to all our lives! Rest in peace Dr. Mazzola-- Your influence lives on. Turina And Steve Young

I met Steven when I joined the Mardi Gras Krewe he was a vital part of. Linda Kay and Steve often hosted parties and pre parties. He was such a sweet and gentle soul, I just KNEW, from his demeanor, that he was a blessing to his patients. He was a quiet and gracious host who never liked being the center of attention. I always thought Linda Kay was the perfect complement to him. She is as vivacious, as he tended to stay in the background....being every bit the Soithern Gentleman. My condolences to his family. He leaves a void in his family, his community, his Krewe, that can never be filled. He is free of pain now and it is time to try to celebrate his New Life with those family members and friends who have gone before and are anxiously awaiting him!

I only knew Dr. Mazzola causally but based upon a large number of his patients that I saw at DuPont, I was most impressed with his medical care and the response his patients gave regarding their care by him. He and his office staff were a "class act". I know that his family, friends and patients will dearly miss him. Donald R. Webb, M.D.
