Shirley Mae Wood Hall, 87, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026.
Born on September 21, 1938, in San Augustine, Texas, to Clyde Enlow Wood and Ella Mae Roberts Wood, Shirley moved to Orange, Texas, with her family when she was approximately one year old. She graduated from Stark High School and went on to become one of Orange's most respected banking professionals.
Shirley began her banking career in 1958 and spent more than 40 years serving customers and mentoring colleagues throughout Orange's banking community. Through hard work, determination, and exceptional leadership, she rose through the ranks from teller to Senior Vice President and member of the Board of Directors. Throughout her career, she served several Orange-area financial institutions, including Orange Bank, Unitedbank-Orange, and Hibernia Bank. Along the way, she earned recognition from the Texas Bankers Association and became known for her professionalism, expertise, and unwavering commitment to customer service. Her career served as an inspiration to many and reflected the respect she earned throughout the banking industry.
A lifelong member of Cove Baptist Church, Shirley's faith guided her throughout her life and was reflected in the kindness and generosity she showed to others.
Shirley was a remarkable woman—sharp, witty, and full of life. She was exceptionally well-read and could discuss history, genealogy, current events, politics, and countless other subjects with ease. She had a lifelong passion for researching family history and preserving stories for future generations and remained actively interested in civic affairs throughout her life.
Shirley embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. She especially enjoyed traveling with her beloved husband, Billy Baron Hall, creating treasured memories together as they explored new places and experienced the history and culture of the communities they visited. She also possessed a creative spirit and enjoyed making pottery and creating stained-glass artwork.
Beyond her banking career, Shirley was active in her community and was involved in numerous civic and professional organizations, including the Orange Altrusa Club, where she served in a leadership role. She combined a sharp mind, a servant's heart, an artist's spirit, and a fierce devotion to family. Her commitment to both her profession and her community earned the respect and admiration of many throughout Southeast Texas.
Though she had no children of her own, Shirley loved her family deeply and fiercely. She cherished her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews and followed their lives with great interest, pride, and affection. Her wisdom, humor, strong convictions, and unwavering love will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde Enlow Wood and Ella Mae Roberts Wood; her husband, Billy Baron Hall; her sisters, Betty Wood Deville, Kathryn Ann Pool, and Charlotte Wood Burch; her brother, Billy Clyde Wood; her nephew, Mayo "Skippy" Anthony Deville; and her great-nephew, James Anthony "Tony" Brindza.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Jackie Wood; brother-in-law, William Terrell Burch; nieces and nephews, Teri (Robin) Wallace, Will Burch, Angie (Scott) Coker, Tracie Wood, Britt Wood, Theron (Jennifer) Pool, and Troy (Wendy) Pool; great-nieces and great-nephews, Taylor Colten, Kyle Wallace, Haley Landry, Gracie Blackwell, Holly Paulos, Jackson Calhoun, Britton Edgerly, Zach Krummel, Dylan Krummel, and Natalie Lum; five great-great-nieces and four great-great-nephews; life-long friend of 78 years, Judy Tutor, who was like a sister to her and many dear friends.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Candace Degeyter Bilbo for the exceptional care, kindness, and companionship she provided to Shirley. Candace held a special place in Shirley's heart, and her visits brought Shirley great comfort and joy.
Shirley leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, service, community leadership, knowledge, creativity, and love. Her life was a testament to hard work, lifelong learning, and devotion to those she cherished most.
