Born in Deweyville, Texas, on March 4, 1938, she was the daughter of Nolan Spears and Grace (Fountain) Spears. Joy started college shortly after her husband passed away at an early age so she could support their children. She graduated from Lamar University in 1984 and was on the Dean’s List during that time. Joy was a teacher for 19 years at different school districts including Kirbyville ISD and Deweyville ISD. She was a wonderful teacher, confidant, and friend to her students. Joy taught and encouraged children to be successful at living and helped them find their individual strong points. She was the student’s favorite class of the day and she helped them find the positive inside themselves. Joy adored her children more than anything and was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She left an impact on so many lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nolan Spears and wife Grace; loving husband, Jarvis Lummus; siblings, N.L. Spears, Mickey Spears, Paul Spears, Rogers Spears, Lillian Simmons and Judy Spears.

She is survived by her children, Tracy Lummus and wife Cheryl and Tony Lummus and wife Julie all of Deweyville; grandchildren, Justin Lummus and Tori Lummus; siblings, Patsy Brister, Tommy Spears and wife Estelle, and Elaine Hanner and husband John all of Deweyville.

Serving as pallbearers will be Justin Lummus, Tommy Spears, Vance Spears, Rodney Whitfield, Bill Pokorney, and Dean Whitfield.
