Obituary
Michael Edward Keeney Sr., 65, of Orange, Texas, passed peacefully at home on May 23, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Floyd E. Keeney, Jr. and Betty Hunter Keeney of Groves. Texas.
Mike graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School in 1973. Following graduation, he attended Texas Tech University where he played football for the Raiders. He then went to the Game Warden Academy in Austin, Texas. In 1982 he was stationed in Orange County, Texas where he served as a Game Warden until his retirement in 2010. Along the way he married the love of his life, Halye Keeney. They dated for a brief four-week period before they wed March 8, 1987. They welcomed their only child, Michael Edward Keeney II, into the world March 1988. On March 8, 2020 they celebrated their 33rd anniversary just as in love as 1987. Mike was an active member of Cowboy Church and the Cowboy Cross Band. He also enjoyed his membership in the SALT Club and Orange Gun Club.
He is predeceased by his mother and father.
Surviving in addition to his wife is his son, Michael Edward Keeney II of New York City, NY; His sister, Karen Rohrbaugh of Groves and her son, Collin Rohrbaugh of College Station. His brother, Floyd E. Keeney III and his wife Laura Lynn Pete Keeney and their children Dr. Hunter Keeney and his wife, Beth Jones Keeney with their daughters, Alice and Layla; Jillian Keeney Hunt and her husband, Dr. Jason Hunt with their children, Jackson and Lillian; and Dr. Erin Keeney Dyson and her husband Brent Dyson and their daughter, Blake. His nephew, Robert W. Turner III and his wife Jenifer Daniels Turner of Vidor with their daughter, Jade. Julie and Bobby Walker of Orangefield and their son Shiloh were special friends to the family.
Mike will always be remembered as a gentle giant, at 6’9” and 400 pounds who carried a gun. Mike touched the lives of all those he met from the outlaws he wrote tickets to the children he taught Boating and Hunting Education. Once you met him, his sweet smile and infectious laugh left an impression impossible to forget. He was a special, Christian man that loved to share his faith with others especially through music. Over the years he played his guitar to the children in the nursery at Community Church, at family get-togethers, and any other time he could. His voice and skill with a guitar were a gift from God and it was his greatest joy to minister through that gift.
A celebration of life for Big Mike will be held Saturday, May 30, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at The Cowboy Church of Orange County located at 673 FM 1078, Orange, Texas 77632.

Big Mike was such a “gentle giant” with such a caring heart of compassion! He was a Godly example to all who were blessed to know him. His beautiful singing soothed many fears, and ushered many into the presence of Heaven! We have so many beautiful memories of him and his family at Community Christian Church & School. It was an honor and a blessing to call him Brother and Friend.
Our hearts and prayers are with you Halye, Michael, and the entire Keeney family. He left a might big hole in our hearts when he left, but we know that the promise of seeing him again and that wonderful smile when we arrive, will sustain and comfort until we gather once again!
Prayers & Blessings, Richard & Cyndi Kain and Sarah (Kain) Douglas

Gosh what a good person Mike was. In the mid 70’s we had so much fun with the dances and all the donuts and coffee you could drink all free on Monroe in Groves. Oh the friends me Paula, Dewayne Smith, Loel and Joel Welch, Keith,Darla,Terry,Dolly, Libby,Sherry,Preston Harper, and Charlene. Trips to the beach in the red and white VW van. And Mike would take care of us all and sang camp fire songs. RIP Mike Friends Chandra Parrish

I remember going over to the Keeney home often when I was a kid (my dad was a game warden too). Mike was always so nice-as was the whole family. I always felt welcome there. I pray for peace for the family as they navigate this time.

I just saw Mike's obituary. He and I were friends in high school. I was a sophomore when Mike was a senior at PNG. We were on the football team together. Mike and I hung out that year, 72-73. He taught me how to play guitar. We made trips to McFaddin Beach almost every weekend when it got warm. I was at the beach this weekend and thought about Mike and those trips. Mike and I drifted apart after he went to college. Regardless, we seem to never have friends quite like we had in our youth. We would see each other later in life because we were both in law enforcement. It was always a warm reunion. May God's Grace be upon Mike Keeney. He had a gentle, loving, and MIGHTY soul. With deepest sympathy to his family and abiding affection for Mike, Mike Kirkpatrick

Mike and I went to High School together and were DeMolays together at the Groves Lodge. Was at my house alot back then. Mike, Dwayne Smith and I were together alot back then. Years later, a few months after my daugher was born we went camping at dam B and Mike played the guitar and sang to her to get her to go to sleep. Heart warming memory of Big Mike leaning over her little seat and singing "I'm your puppet" and seeing her face just smile. Loved him then and miss him know. God Bless my friend, rest easy for we have your back. Keith Neal PNG class of 1975

Hayle and Michael...Tom and I are so sorry to hear about Big Mike. We are so lucky to have so many wonderful moments in our childhood filled with memories of him. I still have a cassette tape of Big Mike singing and playing guitar to John Anderson's Swingin with Tom and I (mostly me) singing along at the top of our lungs. All the Halloween's where he was dressed in all black, standing so still only to eventually move and scare the living daylights out of the high school kids...I could go on and on. I hope this picture makes you smile. It was taken when Mom retired. Kinda cool to think these dear friends are reunited again after all these years. Sending you love and big hugs.

Big Mike and I were great friends back in the 80s. Mike was a rookie game warden and I was a rookie trooper. Mike used to ride with me on patrol and he spent many hours at my house when we were off duty. Me, Mike and Judge Flo spent many hours fishing out on Sabine Lake. Mike used to get mad and threaten to write me a ticket because I didn’t have a fishing license. Judge Flo would look at Mike and ask “Whose precinct are we sitting in? Whose court are you gonna file that in?” One day on my birthday, Mike showed up at my house with a combination hunting/fishing license that he bought for me. I have so many wonderful memories of my friend. Some of the best times in my life. Until we meet again...
