Dr. Leonides “Nene” Ponce Medrano-Hababag
Dr. Leonides “Nene” Ponce Medrano-Hababag, 70, of Orange, passed away on August 12, 2023, after a brief battle with brain cancer at Houston Methodist Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Remembrance will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 31, 2023, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Orange. Officiating will be Reverend Ernie Carpio.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 30, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with a Wake service at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Rosary Service beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Born in the Philippines, on September 7, 1952, she was the daughter of Manuel Medrano and Maxima Ponce, she later moved to the United States with her husband, Manuel. While in the United States she lived and worked in California, New York, Michigan, and finally Orange, Texas where she served the community and practiced medicine for 30 years. Even after seeing everything this country had to offer, she chose to make Orange her home, and be laid to rest here. Nene was the ultimate caregiver to everyone she came across. She was a loyal member of St. Francis Catholic Church for numerous years. Nene was involved and passionate with the annual blood drive that St. Francis Catholic Church held and the nine-day evening Mass before Christmas, a Filipino tradition. She also enjoyed reading in her spare time as well as shopping, often closing the mall down. Nene absolutely loved her career as a pediatrician, taking care of all her babies throughout the years. She was a proud member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the Southeast Texas Pediatric Society. She was exceptional at everything she set out to do but was especially fond of cooking and entertaining her loved ones and friends. She will always be remembered for her famous eggrolls and noodles. To know Nene was to love her. Her smile lit the room when she walked in, she never met a stranger, and welcomed all with open arms. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Manuel Medrano and Maxima Ponce; and siblings, Orlando Medrano, Renato Medrano, and George Medrano.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Manuel Hababag; children, Gracious Sarasak, and Justin Hababag; siblings, Rolando Medrano and wife, Teresita, Lourdes Claro and husband, Salvador, Leticia Sunpongco and husband, Efren, and Manuel Godfrey Medrano and wife, Teresita; sister by choice, Patti Guilbeaux and husband, Mike; along with many other loving actual and adopted family and friends.
In Lieu of flowers, the family of Nene asks that donations be made to St. Mary Catholic School in her honor at 2600 Bob Hall Rd, Orange, TX 77630.

I truly loved her. She was both of my kids pediatrician and a Great one at that. She diagnosed my oldest daughter,
E'Laziah, with Laryngomalacia. It's a birth defect characterized by the softening of the tissues above the larynx (voice box). She told me, babies with this condition usually have stridor (noisy or high-pitched breathing) and that it would go away on its own by the time my baby is one year old and it did. Other people said she didn't know what she was talking about because they never heard of it before. So she sent me to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston and sure enough she was right. I never doubted her but she and I had to proved to others that she was right all along because my 1st child passed away from SIDS. She will truly be missed by me and my girls. Heaven surely gained an angel.

My condolences to the family of Dr. Manual Hababag at the lost of his wife, Dr. Medrano. She was the pediatrician of both my children for over 20 years. From what can tell, she was a very caring woman. Praying for the family and her staff workers as well. Sincerely Doris Ceaser/Megan Richard

We started going to Dr Medrano's practice after a horrible experience with my youngest daughters first doctor. I'll never forget she came in the examine room and said, "How's our baby today?" Claiming her and treating her as she would her own child. She was always compassionate and caring! I'm heart broken for her loss and so very blessed that she was the one taking care of the first 15yrs of my Piper's life! The world's loss is heavens gain! Thank you for sharing this beautiful person!

Tita Nene you were supposed to be my ninang . But my dad didn't approve because ate Grace was already his goddaughter. So for my wedding I had you be my sponsor/ninang. I am forever grateful for all the support you have given our family. I'm so happy I got a chance to say, " I love you " when I visited you in May. May you rest in heaven .

In the many times that we spent together, I can’t recall an instance when Nene complained about how she was mistreated. A proof that she looked at the good in other people. I never heard her criticize or demean people. If there was a perfect human being, that would be Nene. Kindness and generosity was ingrained in her. Nene was thoughtful and caring. During one of our “lakwatsa“ adventures that ended me taking her home in the early hours of the morning, she didn’t allow me to drive home alone and insisted that I sleep over at their house in Novaliches. Nene was smart and unselfish. When I asked her help in class lessons she shared her notes and patiently explained lectures to me. After medical school we lost touch with each other until about 10 years ago, in their visit to the East Coast, we joined other classmates for dinner. We updated each other and she shared with me her struggles in life without rancor to those who wronged her. Nene left her mark not only to her family she loved, to the patients she provided care but to many of us who shared her life’s journey. To Manny, Grace, Justine, her siblings and friends my deepest sympathy. Words can never express the magnitude and scale of how I feel over the loss my dear friend, Nene.

She is basically responsible for me going to become a nurse. My first job as a medical assistant was with Dr Hababag, of Dr Medrano was there. One day she caught me walking around and talked to me and basically told me “do not stop here” go back to school. So I owe her really for giving me that nudge.
I try to pass that on in my life, With my employees.
Thank you Dr Medrano-Hababag

Nene, such a beautiful classmate who I share a birthday with. Her perennial smile & sweet demeanor will be missed by all. She never have a bad thing to say about anybody. Calm in any situation, infectious in her enthusiasm & happiness at our reunions, she & Manny are both gracious & ever generous donors to any project for our Alma. Mater. Heaven is lucky to have you. Rest in Peace my friend. We will see you again some day. Condolences to Manny, Grace & Justin, nobody can replace her but know that she’s loved by many. Her life on earth is a fulfilled one. May perpetual light shine upon her. Love you forever & will miss you everyday. Say hi to my other dear friend Minda when you see her in Heaven.

Dr. Medrano took care of all 3 of my children from birth. I will miss seeing her sweet smile when I go into the office, I couldn’t have asked for a kinder more compassionate doctor to take care of my kids. Prayers for Dr. Hababag and the rest of her family during this hard time.

Dr. Medrano was extremely passionate about our blood drive. She and Dr. Hababag were always there to help. I set up the date, and they provided the donuts, kolaches, juice, fruit and various snacks. That was breakfast. THEN for lunch, we had fried chicken or Subway sandwiches. Generous to a fault. She also provided two gift cards to be given to two lucky donors. Not only all this, but they were there to help and even clean up. It won’t be the same without you, my friend. Love you:two_hearts::two_hearts:. Carolyn

She was always sweet and generous. Always brought gifts to the nurses for Christmas and always had one for my grand baby. She told me once I don’t know what it is but Destiny behaves so much better when you bring her. She is a different person when her mommy brings her. Rest easy, know you were loved and appreciated.
