Debbie was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on August 18, 1954. She was the daughter of Theresa and Ernest Lake. She loved her family and always considered her nieces and nephews as her children. Family get togethers were always her favorite and she loved being able to see everyone. Debbie was a registered nurse, working for hospice for many years, while finishing up her career at St. Mary’s Hospital in the telemetry unit. She was a kind and caring person who always took care of those around her. Debbie enjoyed bowling, DIY crafts, and was a big fan of Star Trek. Debbie’s love for her family will last forever and she will be deeply missed by all her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Theresa Lake; and brother, Rick Bertrand.

She is survived by her father, Ernest F. Lake of Nederland; siblings, Sharon Bertrand Kasper and husband Michael of Nacodoches, Cathy Hardin of Port Arthur, Jeff Lake and wife Sara of Beaumont, Christina Bergeron and husband Charles of Groves; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Shriner’s and Sertoma Club or St. Jude’s.

Debbie has been my best friend since sophomore year at Bishop Byrne High School in Port Arthur, so over 50 years. We first became friends because we both love to read, and could share our favorite books, though hers leaned toward fantasy and I was into historical fiction. I could go to Debbie with anything, joys or sorrows, and she was always ready to share, to half a trouble or double a joy. She once agreed to keep my toddler daughter, Claire, for me while I went to work at a day care center, because Claire was sick. Debbie had worked at the hospital until nearly midnight, but she was willing to take my little one at 7:30 in the morning, because that's who she was. She had a heart "as big as Texas"! When I heard she had died on Good Friday, my sister helped me by saying Debbie would be "home for Easter"! I am so blessed to have had her in my life, and I look forward to seeing her again, with her true beauty on vibrant display. Love you, Debbie! Fran
