My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Chad. I hope you find peace in the love and joy he brought to you. I have many memories of Chad but the stand outs were his ability to make those around him laugh and his caring compassionate side. He will be missed and remembered fondly. God bless.

Another Bobcat has gained their wings this week. Chad was a legend in his own right. He was a friend to many who were blessed to know. He had a great way to make you laugh.
To Heggie, Cole, and Colby, my heart reaches out to you with peace of mind. May God bless you during this most saddened time but know that you are not alone.

I haven't processed this yet--so this is my first stab at grieving the loss. Chad was by best friend in High School and into college. We were brothers in the trenches on the football field. As coach Julian Bush would say, Chad was "...one tough hombre." Our freshman year Chad played a whole half of football on a gimpy leg. When the x-rays showed a broken bone, a legend was born. It grew as quickly as the man himself. I remember the summer between our freshman and sophomore years, he went from looking like a normal 14 year-old kid to looking like Bruiser Brody and Hacksaw Jim Duggan's love child (old pro wrestlers in case you are wondering who the heck those guys are). At first I thought all those swims in Cow Bayou were finally beginning to modify his genetics, but in fact he lived in the weight room. At 15 Chad could squat his VW Rabbit. By 18 he could bench press the whole coaching staff (minus coach Godwin). He was one of the area's best powerlifters, shot-putters, and one of the state's best offensive linemen. He was a beast with a sense of humor and personality to match. In fact, it was Chad's humor that endeared people to him. Our eighth grade English teacher playfully scolded Chad after he gave his assigned speech to the class. His speech was about something he kept in his pocket. He said the object was always hard and long. He said it was normally around 4" long, but when it was ready for action it was closer to 7". He told the class he occasionally took it out when he needed it but most of the time it stayed tucked away in his pants. When he announced to the class he was about to take it out and show everyone, Mrs. Woods tried to intervene, but she was too late. She looked on in disbelief as Chad pulled out his...pocket knife (we were so uncivilized then). She tried to conceal her own laughter but could not. She did manage to tell Chad never to do that again. His humor included an eclectic musical taste that included Hank Williams, Jr, Mötley Crüe, AC/DC and--Culture Club. That's right. Chad loved Boy George. He would ask, 'Who wants to join the Coulter Club?" His version of "Karma Chameleon" still rattles around in my head sometimes. Chad loved music and tolerated my insistence that when we were in my car, we only listened to Christian music. We didn't ride in my car very often. Instead, we would wedge ourselves into his little white VW Rabbit and head to the Bridge City Pizza Hut for the Tuesday night all-you-can-eat buffet and a few games of 10-Yard Fight. I think Chad and I were the sole reason Pizza Hut pulled the plug on the Tuesday night buffet. They were losing too much money. One final note: Chad was the only guy I've ever known who named his own mustache. Twice. My favorite? "The Lustache". I remember Chad as the funny, strong as an ox, life of the party type, but I knew Chad as a loyal friend and straight-shooter who loved people and gave himself without hesitation. I experienced this most poignantly when my sister and niece were killed in a car accident two weeks before we graduated. Chad was the first person I called when I got the news. All my classmates were kind and supportive, leaving notes and cards in my driveway that terrible night, but it was Chad who knew me best and knew how to be my friend. We were already going to Kilgore together to play football, but after our family's loss, I could not have traveled that road without him. After Kilgore, our paths diverged. I became a minister and got married, and Chad went to SFA and then married Heggie. We lost touch over the years as childhood friends often do, but I will never forget my friend Chad, and if you knew him, you won't either. To Heggie and the boys, you are not grieving alone. The thoughts and prayers of an entire community are with you, as are mine. May you find comfort and peace in the presence of those grieving with you, and in God who walks with you through the pain. Rest in peace, old friend.

Chad was a man who totally had his students best interest. He was loved by all the staff at Orangefield. I had the privilege while substituting at times for Chads class and his students really liked him. Your personality used to keep us all laughing and smiling even tho you acted like the tuff guy. He was a well respected teacher who made an impression on me as I was a just starting my substitute teaching at Orangefield Jr. I remember your words to me as I started there: " make them respect you and if they give you any trouble, tell the Couch Coulture will take care of it" It really meant a lot to me to know he had my back. I also taught for Heggie and she was such a smart beautiful bright lady. Her and Chad made the ideal couple with two great sons. RIP in peace couch. You will be missed. Rita Trahan

I did not have the privilege of knowing Chad for long but what I found out quickly was he had a way to make you smile even in the midst of the battle he was facing. As I think of him now, I smile. He has touched so many lives with his love of others and his gift of teaching. He was a great man who has left a wonderful legacy behind. He was larger than life and he lived it to the fullest. Heggie ,even though Chad is gone, he still lives in your heart and in the children that he has left you. Cherish and treasure those memories for they will give you strength to carry on. My deepest sympathies for the loss of your husband. Robin Bickham SETX Hospice

Chad was one of the favorite classmates at Orangefield! I only have fond memories of him and his family. He was always smiling & laughing and was the kindest of souls. He will be missed. I pray for Heggie & his boys as well as Hollie & the rest of the family. I am glad he is no longer suffering. I wish healing in the wonderful memories. He was definitely taken too early, God must have a better purpose for him. All my love , Julie Richard Huerta
