Walter Lee “Goob” Wheeler, Jr., 62, of Orange, Texas, passed away on March 20, 2026, in Houston.
There will be a celebration of life to honor Walter at a later date.
Born in Longview, Texas, on October 21, 1963, he was the son of Walter Wheeler, Sr. and Marilyn Sandland Wheeler. He was a devoted educator, passionate outdoorsman, and embraced life with enthusiasm and care. Walter was a dedicated instructor at Lamar University, where his commitment to his students and teaching mechanical engineering was unwavering. He took great pride in sharing his knowledge and inspiring those around him, leaving a lasting impact on countless minds who were fortunate to learn from him. Beyond his academic pursuits, Walter found joy in the outdoors. His love for fishing, hunting, and water-related activities highlighted his adventurous spirit and deep appreciation for nature. Those close to him knew well his delight in being on the water. Before his time as an educator, Walter embraced a different form of creativity as a chef. His culinary skills and passion for cooking revealed another layer of his diverse talents and his love for bringing people together through food. Equally gifted with his hands, he enjoyed repairing and fixing things around him, reflecting a practical and thoughtful approach to life. Throughout his life, Walter exemplified kindness, dedication, and a zest for learning and living fully. He will be remembered with great respect and affection by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Wheeler, Sr. and Marilyn Wheeler.
He is survived by his loving wife, Belinda James; his son, Nicholas Wheeler; his step-sons, Major James, and Beau Myrick and wife, Renee; his grandchild, Eloise Wilhelm; his sister, Carol Ford; his brother, John Wheeler; and numerous other loving family members and friends.
Cremation will be held under the direction of Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.
