Velma Jean Couture, born on October 26, 1934, in Orangefield, Texas to Jobe and Genie Waldrep, peacefully departed this life on July 7, 2025, in Beaumont, Texas. A devoted homemaker, Velma’s loving spirit and culinary talents left an indelible mark on the hearts of her family and friends.
After marrying Edward Couture, Velma moved to various locations across the country, including Charleston, South Carolina, Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Virginia Beach, and California. Each place held cherished memories for Velma and her family, reflecting her adaptability and zest for life.
Throughout her life, Velma was known for her exceptional skills as a cook and baker, delighting many with her famous yeast rolls and delicious German chocolate cake. Her creative talents extended well beyond the kitchen; she was also a successful gardener, quilt maker, and dedicated volunteer quilt maker at Thrift and Gift in Orange for many years. Velma's active involvement in her church community showcased her generous nature and commitment to serving others, as she often helped make peanut brittle for church fundraisers, spreading joy through her sweet creations.
Velma is survived by her loving daughters, Beverly Couture, Dr. Susan Couture, and Wanda Mock and her husband Tim; her son, Steven Couture, along with her grandchildren, Christine Cochran, Jackson Mock, Quest Mock, Brad Couture, and Brock Couture; and great-grandchildren Kobe Rios and Niko Cochran. Additionally, she is remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family and friends who felt fortunate to share in her life.
Velma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Couture, and her parents, Jobe and Genie Waldrep. She is also reunited in spirit with her siblings, J.C. Waldrep, Jr., Vernon Waldrep, Thomas Waldrep, Esther, Juanita Myers, and Nola Mae McShan.
Velma Jean Couture’s legacy of love, creativity, and devotion will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew her. She leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories that will be cherished by her family and all who were touched by her kindness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 14, 2025, at Claybar Funeral Home in Bridge City. Officiating will be Reverend James Waldrep. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Orange.
Visitation will begin prior to the service at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 14, 2025, at Claybar Funeral Home in Bridge City.
Serving as pallbearers will be Brad Couture, Brock Couture, Jackson Mock, Quest Mock, and Johnny Williams.
