Born in Orange, Texas, on July 1, 1940, she was the daughter of Sylvester Columbus Simar and Ophelia Strack (Gallien). Sylvia dedicated her life to caring for others as the caretaker and communication hub of her family. Her warm and nurturing personality made her a pillar of strength and love for all who knew her. Sylvia's proudest accomplishments included being a Marine Officer’s Wife, a devoted mother, and a quite active member of the Altar Society at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. St. Mary’s has always been an important part of her life. It was the church she married her junior high sweetheart and love of her life, J.R. Mires on Sept 3, 1966. During her husband’s time with the Marines the couple enjoyed the chance to travel the world, and also reside in Hawaii for a number of years. She returned to her home of Orange, Texas after the tragic loss of her husband and surrounded herself with the family that she cherished. She was lovingly known as "Grammy" to her two grandchildren. Sylvia Ann Mires will always be remembered for her kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family. Her legacy of love will continue to live on in the hearts of all those she touched.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Colonel J.R. Mires, Jr. USMC; her parents Sylvester Simar and Ophelia Strack; her siblings Ray Simar, Roy Simar, William “Bill” J. Simar, Peggy Rashall (Simar).

She is survived by her son, Joseph Mires and daughter-in-law, Kendra Waldbusser; grandchildren, Kade Mires and Ana Mires; nephews, Rick Rashall and his wife Glenna, Marty Rashall and many other nieces and nephews. (After the death of her sister Peggy, Rick and Marty became more like sons than nephews to her); cousins, Kate Wolfford, Karen Anderson, and Ronnie Peveto; numerous cousins; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rose Simar, Dolores Simar, Willie Rashall, Del Mires and his wife, Anabell, Marilyn Broussard and her husband Tim, Wynn Mires and his wife, Patricia; as well as other loving family members and friends.
