Shirley G. McCarey

Shirley G. McCarey, 93, of Orange, Texas, died on Monday, September 11, 2017.

Funeral services will be 2:30 PM, Sunday, September 17, 2017, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Officiating will be Reverend Don Sheffield of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Orange. Cremation to follow under the direction of Claybar Haven of Rest Crematory.

Visitation will precede the service, starting at 1:00 PM.

Born in Antelope, Montana, on March 8, 1924, to Dewey J. and Charlotte A. Gross Shirley. Shirley was a resident of Orange, TX since 1978. She was partially raised in New Rockford, North Dakota. She and family moved to Los Angeles, California because of her father’s serious health condition, where he died and is buried at Sawtell Veterans Cemetery. She was married in Las Vegas, Nevada at a friend’s home. Shirley completed Business College in Los Angeles and worked at the County Court House and Western Union in Los Angeles. She then worked as a secretary at Disney Studios in Burbank, CA, and Monogram Studios in the Hollywood area. Shirley also worked as a secretary for Judge Anderson of Blackfoot, Idaho, and for the Fluor Corporation of Houston. Shirley had a great love of horses, having ridden since the age of six. She was a collector of friends, leaving behind a lifelong friend, plus a first grade friend, as well as high school friends. She also loved to travel the United States and abroad.

She is preceded in death by her parents, along with step-father, Edward L. Knots; and husband, Lacey J. McCarey. She leaves behind her sons, Michael W. McCarey and wife, Terri, of Camarillo, CA and Patrick L. McCarey and wife, Debbie, of Orange, TX; four grandchildren, Dusti Burcham and husband, Kevin, Jenna Cox and husband, Wilton, Tanner McCarey, and Jenesee Johnson; four great-grandchildren, Caroline Burcham, Nicholai Burcham, Easton Cox, and Beckett Cox; and numerous other family members.

In Lieu of flowers, at the family’s request, Shirley would have wanted donations to be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church to help with flood damages from hurricane Harvey, at P.O. Box 1389, Mauriceville, Texas 77626.
