Robert Arlice "Robbie" Murphy

September 27, 1927 — February 20, 2020

Robert Arlice “Robbie” Murphy was born on September 27, 1927 in Bessmay, Texas to Annie and Kelly Black. She passed away on February 20, 2020 in Austin, Texas.

Robbie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald E. Murphy, daughter Jerri, and sister Annie Mae Wells. She is survived by her son Robert “Bobby” Murphy, his wife Carol and daughter Lauren, as well as her grandson Jeremy Richard.

Robbie married Gerald in 1948 and enjoyed 50 years of marriage before his passing in 1998. Both Gerald and Robbie were long time members of Wesley United Methodist Church of Orange, Texas. They lived for many years in Roselawn, one of those mid-century neighborhoods where children played outside together until dark, riding bikes, throwing balls and climbing trees. Robbie was the quintessential housewife, sewing outfits, cooking mouth-watering meals and baking delicious desserts. She loved the New York Yankees during the 1960’s but later became an avid Houston Astros fan, listening to every game on the radio. The family had a camp just out of town on West Bluff of the Sabine River where they spent the summers with Bobby and Jerri; boating, skiing and fishing daily until school began. Robbie was fond of shrimping, particularly sorting the shrimp from all the other sea creatures, as they spent many hours on Sabine Lake. They also enjoyed their many trips to the farm, where Gerald was raised near Ackerman, Mississippi, and their many camping adventures on area lakes. Her first life challenge came in the late 1960’s as she developed retinitis pigmentosa, a rare retinal disease that in time rendered her blind. Despite her blindness she was the rock of the family, always cheerful and loving. After Gerald’s passing, Robbie was able to live a full life with the help of her close friends and caregivers. She constantly amazed everyone with her ability to maintain her independence. Her final years were spent in Austin, Texas close to her son and his family.

The Murphy family wishes to thank the many caregivers at Orange Villas and Park Bend Health Center for the loving care they provided over the past few years.

Memorial services will be held in the sanctuary at Wesley United Methodist Church in Orange this Saturday, February 29 at 11 am. Interment will follow at Autumn Oaks Cemetery on Old Highway 90.
