John T. McMahon

October 20, 1932 — July 3, 2020

John Terence McMahon, born October 20, 1932, in Canton, Ohio, lost his battle with Parkinson's and COVID 19 on July 3, 2020. He was 87 years old.

Terry came to Texas after graduating Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1954. He served his country as a Flight Navigator and was based at Ellington Air Force Base. After the Air Force, he returned to Washington D.C. and was with the Department of Justice. He began Law School at Georgetown University but finished his legal studies at the University of Houston, graduating Cum Laude in 1961. Throughout his studies he garnered numerous awards and recognition for his ability to write the Law. Terry held numerous high-level executive positions throughout his forty plus years as a lawyer. His oil and gas experience began with Wanda Petroleum, Ashland Oil and he was General Counsel of Enterprise Products Company and Gulf States Oil and Refining, all of which were domestic companies. While in Houston, he was Adjunct Professor at South Texas School of Law.

In the late 1980's, he accepted the position of General Counsel of Occidental de Colombia in Bogota, Colombia. He then went on to perform the duties of General Counsel of Oman Oil Company in the Sultanate of Oman. His travels while there included Kazakhstan, Russia and most of Europe. In 2009, he joined Clyde and Co., a British law firm in the financial district of Doha, Qatar. Throughout his career, he was always a reliable and steadfast source of counsel for both his colleagues and his family.

Terry was truly loved by his wife of 47 years, Don Lil Chatellier McMahon (LSHS '61) and by his children, grandchildren and great grandchild; Terence and Suzanne McMahon of Houston, Susan McMahon of Dallas, Erin and Robert Hirsch of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Michael and Sarah Earley of Doha, Qatar. His grandchildren include Emily and her husband, James Schrock, Megan McMahon, Kaylee McMahon and Sarah Hirsch and his great grandson, James Austin Schrock.
