Clarence Loren Gayle

June 26, 1920 — August 5, 2018

Clarence Loren Gayle was born to James R. Gayle and Sarrah Edgin Gayle on June 26, 1920 in Yuma, Arizona. He moved with his family to Texas in 1929 and died in Beaumont, Texas on August 5, 2018.

Loren married Velma “Snooks” Kennedy on August 6, 1938. They moved to Yoakum County, Texas where Loren farmed for 46 years. “Snooks” preceded Loren in death on April 17, 1987.

Loren served in World War II in the Navy Aircraft Service Unit. He served as an active deacon for 33 years in State Line Baptist Church, Bronco, Texas, which he helped build, and as a deacon in First Baptist Church, Plain, Texas. Loren served eight years on the Plains Independent School District Board of Trustees, four of those as president of the board.

Loren served 35 years on the board of directors for Yoakum County Soil Conservation District, six of those as president. At time of retirement he had served longer than any member of South Plains. He was a charter member of Yoakum County Co-op Gin, serving six of those years as vice-president. He served as a board member for FHA in Yoakum County.

The awards Loren received as a farmer included the following: 1964 - Plains Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Farmer of the Year; 1984 - Lions International Yoakum County District Outstanding Soil Conservationist; 1988 - Plains Lions Club Outstanding Conservation Farmer; 1983 - Goodyear/NAAD Conservation Award of Merit for Outstanding Accomplishment in Resource Conservation; 1984 - Goodyear Conservation Award of Merit 1989 - Goodyear Conservation Award of Merit.

Loren married Jean Clements Kilpatrick on July 24, 1987. They moved to Lubbock, Texas in 1989. Loren was an active member of Bacon Heights Baptist Church, the Open Doors Sunday School Class, and the Son Shiners Choir. In 2010 Loren and Jean moved to Beaumont, Texas to Calder Woods Retirement Center. He was a member of Westgate Memorial Baptist Church and its Sojourners Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Gayle of Beaumont, TX; children, Shirley Cheek of Fort Worth, TX; C. R. “Butch” Gayle and wife, Bobbie of Millers View, TX, Charlene Davis and husband, Ralph of Portales, NM, and Ronald Gayle and wife, Tresa of Carrollton, TX; step-daughter, Becky Reimers and husband, John of Beaumont, TX; sister, Freeda Gayle Burnett of Charlotte, NC; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Loren was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lola Akers, Treasure Norman, Ruby Caloway, Fay Dunn; and brothers, Dervall Gayle, Elmer Gayle, John Gayle, Alvin Gayle, Adolphus Gayle, and Walter Gayle.

A graveside service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Plains Cemetery in Plains, Texas.
