Alice Elizabeth Jean (Lavergne) McCray

November 1, 1941 — August 11, 2020

Alice Elizabeth Jean (Lavergne) McCray went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 11, 2020.

Alice was born November 1, 1941 at Frances Ann Lutcher Hospital in Orange, Texas to Leo and Rose May (Comeaux) Lavergne. She attended St. Mary’s High School in Orange, Texas, graduating in 1960. After attending Lamar Business School she worked for 30 years in the District Clerk Office of Orange County.

Alice was known and loved for her keen sense of humor, love of historical homes and local history. Her loving heart led her to do for many other people, including making “Care Bears” for anyone who requested one, of which there were many. Along with her husband Wayne, she became a long-time sponsor for a child in Guatemala through the Unbound program. She was always eager to hear the latest and to send words of encouragement in her return letters. Alice’s kindness and caring was given an outlet as a volunteer for over 20 years through the Southeast Texas Hospice in Orange.

She was the first volunteer to do craftwork for them. She thoroughly enjoyed tours of historic homes through the Orange County Historic Society and then relating for people the beauty and history of those homes. Alice made sure that a wealth of beautiful flowers adorned her and Wayne’s own historic home’s yard.

Alice was preceded in death by her Mother, Father and her two sisters, Mariam Linscomb and Fran Lavergne. She is survived by her husband, Wayne McCray of Orange, son Michael Howard of Jupiter, Florida, daughter Gina Farrell of San Antonio, Texas, and stepdaughter Clancey McCray of Canton, Georgia. In addition, four grandchildren carry on her spirit, granddaughters Elli Howard of Seattle, Washington and Jamie Howard of Jupiter, Florida, as well as grandsons Aidan and Keagan Farrell of San Antonio, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Wayne McCray, Michael Howard, Raymond McCray, Jim McCray, Mel Swoboda, Lee Ford, Mike Ford, and Rodney Clark. Honorary pallbearer will be Felix Anderson.

Funeral arrangements are through Claybar Funeral Home of Orange, Texas. A Rosary will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at Claybar Funeral Home, with the funeral on Friday, August 14, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Orange, Texas.
