Alexandre Barras

October 15, 1927 — January 21, 2018

Alexandre Barras, 90, died January 21 at his home after a brief illness. He was a longtime resident of Bridge City and was at his home surrounded by loving family when heaven called.

Alex was a retiree of Texaco since the 1980’s and remained quite active in church, community and family activities until very recently. He was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus (Council 3406), serving as a past Grand Knight and a Faithful Navigator. He and his late wife, Edith, were members of the Southeast Texas Cajun Association (now disbanded), and Alex enjoyed many years as a Volunteer Fireman.

He had quite a reputation as a supreme cook, always making dishes for church activities and served as a cook on the bereavement committee of St. Henry Catholic Church. He loved to read and donated his books to the VA clinic when completed. He had a hobby of collecting cookbooks and loved time in the kitchen preparing new dishes for others.

Alex was twice widowed, having been married 52 years to Edith Meyers Barras who died in 1999 and was the mother of his five children. He later married Dorothy Bland, who died in 2011. He is survived by five children: Dianne Barras Stelly, Nikki Barras Simmons, Jeri Barras Hooper, Drew Barras and Kelly Barras. Surviving grandchildren are Sgt. Ronald Stelly (USAF, Retired), Andrea Stelly Petersen, Mechelle Barras Long, Brandon Sherrill, Dr. John Barras, and Craig Barras. Great grandchildren surviving Alex include Wyatt and Chandler Petersen, Elizabeth Jones, Robert and Alex Simmons, Luke and William Barras, Hudson and Sloane Barras, Jessica Alverez Stelly and Chris and Danielle Racz; and many great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stormy Barras Duval.
