Rose Marie Gibert Smelker passed away on October 28th, 2017 at Gracie Woods II Nursing Home in Austin, Texas.
Born on October 7, 1923, in Salt, Gerona, Spain, to Isador and Marina Dalga y Gibert, Rose Marie arrived in Beaumont, Texas in 1928 when she was about five years old, She attended schools in Beaumont, and graduated from Beaumont High School. She then studied at North Texas State Teacher's college (now University of North Texas) for two years. She graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. She also studied at the University of Mexico in Mexico City and completed graduate work at Teacher's College, Columbia University in New York City. Her teaching experience included teaching positions in Nome and Beaumont. She also taught in Lumberton, Texas where she taught Spanish, English and Speech at Lumberton High School. During her teaching career, she was active in several teacher organizations including the Texas State Teachers Association and the Sabine Area Council of Foreign Language Teachers. She was also active in the League of Women Voters and worked in Real Estate.
She was married to Thomas Vernon Smelker, for 64 years until his death in 2013. She enjoyed spending quality time with her children and had a great love for her home life. Among her favorite activities was spending time at the beach, and sharing her passion for the arts with her family.
She is survived by her children, Tom Smelker, of Austin and Janet Smelker Yglesias of Prescott, Arizona, her five grandchildren, Amber Sefert of Dallas, Brent Sefert of Houston, Cory Sefert of Salem, Oregon, Kimberly Hickok of Los Gatos, California, Angela Smelker of Denver, Colorado, and two great grandchildren, Aiden and Logan Sefert, of Houston.
