Gwendolyn Burrows, 85, died in Houston, Texas on April 13, 2018 after a long illness.
Burial will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Orange, TX, on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at 11 am.
Gwen was born on September 19, 1932 in Henderson, Texas to James Clifford and Annie Laura (Muckleroy) Burrows. The family moved to Orange, Texas when she was a child. She graduated from Orange High School in 1950.
Though she always considered Orange her hometown, Gwen lived most of her life in Houston. For 36 years she was employed at Gulf Oil Company where she worked in records management, becoming a supervisor. Gwen had fond memories of her career and colleagues at Gulf Oil. After she retired, she missed the camaraderie and activity of working life, so she took a part-time position at Tuesday Morning, a store in Westbury Square. Working there allowed Gwen to indulge in two of the great pleasures of her life: meeting new friends and bargain shopping. She remained employed at Tuesday Morning for 16 years.
In 1972 Gwen purchased her home in Westbury, a neighborhood in southwest Houston, and continued to live there the rest of her life. She developed good friendships with her Westbury neighbors, several of whom still live close and have maintained a relationship with Gwen for as many as 46 years.
The greatest loves of Gwen's life were her dachshunds: Hooch, Hildy, Roc, Bandi, Rocky II, and Heidi. Gwen kept a dachshund for more than 50 years. On her last day Gwen asked that a photograph of her with Hooch, her first dachshund, taken on their first Christmas together, be brought to her bedside. Gwen's love of the breed prompted her to begin collecting dachshund figurines and dachshund-themed objects in the 1960's. She eventually collected hundreds of these objects, both elegant and whimsical.
Gwen was also a devoted fan of film and television, appreciated the company of great friends, loved the color blue, and enjoyed dancing. As a young woman, she particularly relished joining her friends for dancing at the legendary Shamrock Hotel.
She is survived by cousins Glenn Hill and his wife Val, of Lubbock, TX, Harold Lanning of Bloomfield, MI, Melba Mathews of Fort Worth, TX, and Ladella Peterson of Edmund, OK, as well as many close friends.
